Strawberries
Strawberries
The plant:
The strawberry is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches a maximum height of 20 cm. Its flowers are white or fuchsia pink depending on the variety. Its flowering begins from April to September. Its leaves are hairy and consist of three smaller leaves that are serrated at the edge. There are many varieties of strawberries, depending on how early or late they are and whether they bear fruit once a year.
Where can I plant my strawberry?
The strawberry thrives in sunny positions or semi-shade in areas with a very warm climate. The plant needs at least 6 hours of sun a day to thrive and bear fruit. We can plant our strawberry either in the garden, where we have our vegetable garden, or in pots on our terrace. In our garden it is good to use a ground cover cloth to limit the growth of weeds and to prevent our strawberry fruits from touching the soil and rotting with the moisture. Ideally we can plant our strawberry in pots on our terrace. The best way is to plant them in hanging pots or multi-seat pots.
How do I take care of my strawberry?
The strawberry has a shallow root system so it needs regular watering in a small amount. During the spring season when the temperatures are still moderate we water 2-3 times a week and during the summer months almost daily depending on the prevailing temperatures. Strawberry cultivation is demanding in terms of nutrients, so I use soil rich in organic matter and fertilizer for strawberries in order to have abundant fruiting.
Strawberry cultivation is a lot of fun for young and old because it develops quickly and we see the cycle of the plant from flowering to fruiting.
